Funny monuments in Vilnius

I take photos of strange and funny monuments in all the cities where I go. In this article I will tell you about monuments of Vilnius - the capital of Lithuania.

First monument is the statue of Easter Egg! It locates near railroad station. This egg called Margutis by Lithuanian and it has interesting story. It has installed in 2001 on Uzupis’s square (now Angel is staying in this place). In 2002 Margutis was sold on public sale. Next year artist made new pattern for egg. After ten years egg was damaged by the time. The citizen started benefit company and repaired Margutis.

Belly of luck! Every city, where I was, has monument that need to be rubbed for a luck, money, of for something else. In Vilnius it is a belly!

The Bookman’s Street is showplace with many little monuments. This is example of modern art in heart of Old City

There are many different figures on the walls. I show only three of them.

There is extraordinary place in Vilnius, where creative personalities live – artists, sculptors and other creators. This place named Republic of Uzupis, ‘Uzupis’ means ‘the other side of the river’. The Republic of Uzupis has been compared to Montmartre in Paris and to Freetown Christiania in Copenhagen, due to its bohemian and laissez-faire atmosphere. The symbol of Uzupis is the Angel.

‘Subway’ of Uzupis

Statue of Tsemah Shabad is one of my favorite monuments. He is a real prototype of famous doctor ‘Aibolit’ in soviet literature. It’s very kind and light monument.

There are some Lithuanian monuments made of wood. For example, this is monument under the Three Chests.
