Travel Review Northern Cyprus Day 4 - Part 6: Amphitheatre and the SPA in the ancient ruins of Salamis!
Hello dear blog readers,
here is the next part of my travel review from my round trip through Northern Cyprus and today I would like to give you the next photo impressions and some information about the ancient ruins of Salamis.
In my last travel review yesterday, I gave you some information about the Roman theater in the ruins of Salamis and showed you a lot of photo impressions.
In addition to the Roman theater there also was a Greek amphitheater in the past. Unfortunately, there is hardly anything left of the former amphitheater and it has not been restored for illustration. The excavation and exploration of this area of the ancient ruins of Salamis has not taken place so far.
Here are two photos of the ruin of the former amphitheater:
In comparison to the amphitheater, the ancient thermal baths are still relatively well preserved and are still showing traces of their former glory. Remnants of wall mosaics and fragments of frescoes were found in the ruins, floors covered with "opus sectile", marble benches and leftovers from the old heating system. The thermal baths offered refreshing swimming pools and hot sauna sessions to the citizens in the past.
Due to the large water consumption of the spa water supply, storage and sewage technology was necessary. This task took over an elongated building, which was covered with a barrel vault. It should have had a water capacity of 600 m³, with a base of 30 x 5 m and an estimated water depth of 4 m.

There was also found an inscription in the thermal baths of Salamis, in which the imperial Roman couple Justinian and Theodora are praised as renovators of the city. The inscription suggests that in their time (around 500) both the thermal baths and the basilica of Epiphanius were renewed and embellished.
