A motor ship trip on the Moscow Canal: locks №7 and №8

For a long time I wanted to pass the locks № 7 and № 8 of the Moscow channel, but everything was not given a chance. Walking with the passage of these two locks on passenger heat-trains are extremely rare. But one day my wish finally came true :)

On a small motor ship "Rovesnik" (type "Moskvich") from the quay on the right bank of the Khimki reservoir in Tushino, on Lodochnaya Street, we went for a four-hour walk through the locks in Troitsa-Lykovo.

The general view of our ship will be at the end of the post, but for now look at its interiors. "Rovesnik" (originally "M-50") was built in 1950 and with small modifications has been well preserved to the present day.

I took another picture of him late at night, when we were walking in full darkness along the Moskva River to the wharf in the Trinity-Lykovo.

But the most favorable place for observing the trip was located in the bow of the ship on the open deck, here everyone was mostly hanging out.

But back to our walk. Immediately after departure from the berth in Tushino, I did not manage to get to the lock # 7, I had to wait a bit. We stood at the wall waiting in the upper pool. The place was not deserted at all. On the waiting wall there are two artists with a can of Baltika №9 (Russian beer). I remember that some time ago I bought this potion, I drank it and woke up only in the morning. Yes, I'm not an artist :)

In the meantime, we are allowed to enter the lock chamber.

Everyone is interested. The event is something extraordinary! Many passengers of our flight here have never been.

And someone in the locks has never been.

By the way, locks №7 and №8 are two-chamber, i.е. In the end we will go through two locks, but two cameras each. We will not be lazy alone. Before us there is: a tug-pusher Vladimir Barsukov with a barge.

The way to the Khimki reservoir is cut off by the segmental closure of the upper head of the lock number 7.

We descended into the upper chamber of the seventh lock and immediately go to the lower one.

The middle gate of the seventh gateway is closed. Only after full closing will the water drain in the chamber begin.

The organizers have chosen an unsuccessful time for this walk. Yes, locks №7 and №8 are interesting, but it's already evening. We pass only the second chamber of four, and it's already getting dark. What are we going to look at later?

Surprisingly, to pass locks, even from Moscow there is no need to go anywhere.

After passing between the locks along the southern slope of the Moscow Canal, we approach the lock number 8. Here we are also waiting for two lock chambers.

But first we will pass a unique place in Moscow. Usually motor roads pass through bridges over the canal. But here everything is vice versa. On the ship we pass over the Volokolamsk highway, and the highway, enclosed in the tunnel, passes under us!

Our ship has a nose ramp, which in general sometimes prevents you from looking ahead and striving to climb into the frame.

Did you notice that during the lock, the ships are standing close to the wall of the lock chamber, and not in the center of the camera?

How do they manage to maintain their location when the water level in the chamber changes?

The answer is simple. In the gateway wall there are mines, and in them there are huge floats with hooks - floating eyes. Rymes quietly move through their mines in accordance with the water level. The ship enters the lock chamber, throws mooring lines on floating flaps and quietly "holds" for them during the lock. But here you have to be careful. Ryms sometimes wedges in the mines. In this case, it is necessary to immediately moor the mooring lines, or else it will drag them under water or suspend the ship on the gateway wall (relevant for small ships and boats).

We passed the upper chamber of the eighth lock, now we are waiting for the lower chamber.
