Since ever the Dominican stands in war with garbage or their garbage disposal. The majority of the population lacks the understanding of a clean environment. In addition, poverty and social conflict increase this problem even more. Furthermore, there is a lack of targeted government involvement in tackling this problem.

I'll show you here only minor effects of the gigantic garbage problem of the Dominican Republic.

The government here is fighting a fight against windmills. It is also a generation problem. The parents show their children how to dispose of rubbish on the street or just drop the smallest things on the floor.
It tooks me almost two years to explain the term "trashcan" to my family so that they now know what to put in it. Puuuuh was really hard work ...

In addition to the stench of the large mountains of garbage, unfortunately there is also a large increase of rats and mosquitoes. And Of course, the vermin brings a significant health risks with it. Bacterias, mosquitoes and a high risk of spreading Dengue fever or the known Zikavirus.

Bright spots are initiatives of private organizations or of volunteers, some of whom go on hundrets through the city on Sundays and clear the streets free from garbage. Unfortunately, the first garbage is visible again the next day.

But: steady drops hollow the stone.

And we can help in small matters when we are on vacation and don't look away at environmental sins. As I said, very often the Domincan is unaware of what he is doing with his faulty behavior in the long run.
