Motorist? Bus driver? Taxi driver? Haha, they are just too harmless when it comes to the worst rowdies on Dominican streets:

As a tourist they immediately catch your eye: the crazy "motorcyclists" here in the Dominican Republic.

They always drive without a helmet and rarely have an exterior mirror. Very often, parts of the motorcycle that are completely normal for Europeans are missing: fenders, lighting or whole parts of the fairing. Only what you hear from afar is the exhaust. Actually, always a heap of noise.

How would I describe the driving stick? Oh, there are many attributes: reckless, always daring and cocky. Absolutely no prudence, always taking high risk when driving on the roads. Not in the least they think about the possible consequences of their actions and that they could harm other road users or themselves.

Almost nobody has a driver's license. Well they think this is not necessary for the motorcycle. And in a collision the amazement is big. But pay attention; they blame you, even if the mistake is clearly on their side. And without possible witnesses, it becomes difficult to prove to them a possible guilt.

Otherwise, these motoconchos drive completely without sorrow; They have a tremendous advantage: If they damage a car while driving by, they can quickly escape in the traffic jam. Rider evasion is normal here. Motorcyclists are involved in most accidents. Accordingly, they are also the most common casualties.
But you know what? Nobody cares. This statistic don't deter anyone. It is rather an incentive to go even harder, faster and more daring. They are all "loco" here!

Legitimately you can ask who are these traffic hooligans?? Is it really only the young and cocky teenagers? No, totally wrong; far from it, they are simply all. Even drivers of the police or the military. It seems somehow to be a completely lawless room for everyone.

Also police officers drive without helmet and partly without license plate. Two or three on a motorcycle, and rarely with a mirror. Wrong world!

According to the government, 100'000 of the approximately 2 million motorcyclists don't have driver license. Well, i tend more to the statement: "100'000 maybe have a driver license"!

Motorcycles are very popular. A transport system for everyone and everything. It's very fast and you can use the narrowest ways to get to your destination. Of course it's also used as a means of transport. In fact for everything that fits on a motorcycle. Cupboards, gas bottles or a family of five (of course plus drivers ...)

So far, all attempts to introduce more rules haven't been enforced or they are successfully ignored. Controls take place only occasionally and those who moan loudly can count on the "habit". In most cases that win about any legislation. Because they always drove without a helmet. Well the Dominicans think so easily
Penalties are only available to foreigners. Again, this is typical of the Dominican Republic

So don't be surprised if you meet a Motoconcho in the night without light on the street. By the way, one-way streets aren't valid for motorcyclists (irony).
