Traveling With The Floridagypsy~Matanuska Glacier

Today we are up bright and early! With a hearty meal of raindeer sausage, potato pancakes with homemade applesauce, and fresh eggs from a nearby homestead, we are ready to explore the Matanuska Glacier as seen from the Glenn Highway. 

For the time we leave Palmer, a beautiful agricultural town and head for Glennallen, the scenery is spectacular. Since it is winter time, we are unable to stop just anywhere, but most of the main lookouts have been cleared. The icy glacier is almost a slivery white with blue overtones. It is magnificent. 

This amazing glacier is the largest glacier in Alaska that can be reached by vehicle.  Matanuska Glacier is spectacular to watch as she flows almost like a slow moving river. She is almost 26 miles long and 4 miles across. The Matamuska Glacier forms deep in the Chugach Mountain  Range flowing down through this beautiful valley. What a spectacular sight. 

Matanuska Glacier State Recreation Area provides over two hundred miles of glacier viewing and is located at milepost 101. There is no direct access to the glacier from these trails, but the views are magnificent. Those who wish to access the glacier itself, should drive to  Matanuska Glacier Park , which is a private park at mile post 102. Here you can park right up next to the glacier and those who are prepared can walk out on the glacier itself. There is an entrance fee which can be paid at the office. A small price to pay for a day of astonishing scenery and abundant wildlife.

Grab your backpack and fill a few supplies and a change of clothes. Some energy bars and bottled water are welcome in times of need. Always prepare for the worst, but hopefully you will never need to use them.  Enjoy a beautiful day on the Glenn Highway.
