Skills And Laughter Fill The Homestead

Working On The Homestead

Put your feet on the floor, and hit the day on the run.   With your apron on, your hair up, and a smile on your face, you are ready to get the bread rising. With the fire crackling, the room is warming and the bread is ready to raise. This young lady has skills! As soon as the bread is on it's own, ready to double in size, the fruits of the garden are ready to prepare for the dryer. Once they are rinsed and on the wire drying boards, it is time to put up your feet, grab a cup of tea, and take a break.

Having finished a nice refreshing cup of tea, you are ready to prepare a super nice country breakfast. Today we will make fresh chicken gravey and serve over nice fresh biscuts. As the biscuts are cooking in the oven, the bread is rising, and it is time to crack a few eggs. A quick run to the hen house fills our egg basket.  Fresh eggs are a blessing and are a beauty to crack. This young lady will be glad to flip you some of the finest over easy eggs in town. So come on over to the homestead and take a seat. Breakfast is served!

While my young helper grabs her books, computer, and paper, I begin to prepare the goats milk for some of the tastest goats cheese. While she is focused on Math and English, I begin the cheese making process. As the morning lingers on, the lessons go on without a hitch, and the cheese is finally poured into the cheese forms. Soon our cold storage will be full. It must be time for a hula hoop break. How long can you hula without a break in the rythem?

After a nice green salad from our winter porch garden, we begin to plan the rest of the day. The Idaho snow has been softly falling. Yesterdays tracks are well covered. This is a new day and she has sledding on her brain. As she waxes the runners to the sled, I lay out the blocks to begin to piece together a new quilt. Last months quilt is in the quilt rack and soon the house will be full of neighbors who will be coming to help with the quilting. The promise of another fun day in the Northern Idaho Panhandle comes to life with music and women arriving with treats for the dogs, a new sweater for the baby, and fingers ready to quilt. Come on over and join us, as we gather around the frame. There is never a dull moment in the North Country!

As our guests have left, a small dinner has been prepared and eaten, and the sun has dipped behind the mountain. The dogs have been fed and are curled up in front of the fire place. It is time to curl up in front of the open fire, read a good book, or maybe do today's homework. There is nothing like an nice fire in the fireplace, as the snow continues to fall. Soon it will be time to turn in for the night, as morning comes early on the homestead. Good night Y'All!
