Rondane, Along The blue Mountains

A drive through the blue mountains is an impressive journey geology, nature and culture. The road runs along the east side of Rondane National Park, and you drive through a landscape that offers cultural landscape on one side, and the massif on the other side. The Rondane mountains excude a majestic serenity. They display grandeur and stability, and they can be explored by foot both in summer and in the winter. If you are lucky, you might spot reindeer from one of the last wild reindeer herds in Norway.

Experiences

A dry climate and firm terrain make the area well suited for hiking and summit tours, with many marked paths and tourist cabins. Strømbu is a good starting point for hiking in Rondane from the east, for mountain hikes in Alvdal Vestfjell and to the Breisjøseter tourist cabin. If you drive further along the tourist route, you will find several places that offer adventures and nature exploration. Sohlbergplassen, the viewpoint at Atnsjøen, curves gently around slender pine trees. The platform frames the view towards the lake and the round mountains of Rondane, almost identical to its depiction in Harald Sohlberg's painting "Vinternatt i fjellene".

Sollia Church

Sollia church. In 1720 a law awas introduced that required people to go to church twice a year. The inhabitants of the Setningsdalen valley had to make a long trek across the mountains to Ringebu, and on one occasion an entire group of travellers froze to death. In 1732, the king granted permission to build a new church, but the inhabitants of Sollia did not receive any funds for construction. As a result, the local parishioners mustered the ground, timber and stone to build the church themselves. The timber church was completed in 1738. Near the church there is also a small rest area and an information board.

The realm of the wild

Rondane and Dovre National Parks are the realm of the wild reindeer. In these two parks you wander among the age-old traces of the first reindeer hunters who migrated to Norway thousands of years ago. The landscape of Rondane and Dovre serve as the habitats of wild reindeer, wolverines, golden eagles and gyrfalcons, even as they are fabulous and accessible areas for hiking and trekking. Rondane is also Norways very first national park. Many of the species in these mountains are highly susceptible to intrusion, and anyone who moves about here must therefore show particular consideration. If we take care of this nature, the wild reindeer can continue to wander in the same areas as they have for 10,000 years.
