New Zealand adventure: that is not Flipper!!!!

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

So after our amazing afternoon we had the option to fish for our dinner. The target was Blue Cod and it is well worth it, that fish tasted amazing

So the captain gets out 6 fishing rods and shortly explains what to do. I had never really fished before and was a bit confused but quickly got the hang of it and after a few minutes the fish were being reeled in. And the real reason the Albatross was there became clear, he got the leftovers...

Not all were Blue cods, some were only suitable for bait and not for eating. But some were the real deal. I am not a big fan of the sport of fishing since it is needlessly cruel in my eyes. But I do understand the lure of fishing for your own food. I had not before and still am a bit squeamish when it comes to killing and gutting them. But luckily our Captain had no such issues.

So after a while the exitement has settled down and we are all chilling and chatting with our lines in the water. I was talking to one of our companions and notice there has not been any nibbles on my line for a while so I start reeling it in. Suddenly I see a shape slowly emerging from the murky water and realise that that was NOT AN EMPTY HOOK

The biggest amateur on the ship had accidentally caught a SHARK

I must have caught a cod and the shark must have eaten the cod AND the hook. I start fumbling with the line, messing it up of course and just shove it in the hands of the cap. He said that we should all move back because he was going to remove the hook and to do that he needed to hoist the thing on board.

Apparantly the shark must have heard him because it did not want to come on board just as much as most of us did not want a live pissed off shark in the general vicinity of our fingers and toes. So it jerked its head wildly and must have snapped the line and disappeared back into the deep without having an excursion on our boat. So now there is a shark in the Doubtful Sound with a lip piercing... (he is a big hit with the lady sharks now)

Haha you got me with the pierced shark 😁

thanks, trying to bring a funny note into it is sometimes easy and sometimes very hard...
happy it made you smile

You made a very alert and dynamic post, I felt I was there and I saw that shark. It's interesting to feel the same as you, I like to fish to eat, but at the same time I do not like to kill myself to eat. A Dilemma! I liked this post very much. Thank you!

I usually also only buy the fish from the fishmonger or the supermarket
this was a whole different thing, but you do not get them fresher then that though
thanks for the comment.
