Wonderful Wanderlust: 25 Indispensable Travel Tips 4-7

in #travel8 years ago

In this continuation of our travel series we describe some of the tips 4 - 7 in greater detail. Once we get to the end of the condensed travel tips we will start releasing here on Steemit our Travel Tip Ebook free of charge. We also have a very good Audio book and I will try to find a way for this to be put on sale for free here --> Audio Book.

It was always out intention to be able to release our work to the public, but costs have prevented us from being able to do so. Since our operation is 100% done as a family we have deep feelings, and interest in sharing with the world. With Steemit we feel we now have an opportunity to manage our costs better, and to be able to share our joy of international travel, and everything related under that umbrella. Our website, podcasts, and other social media channels will continue, but we look forward to a robust Steemit and STEEM cryptocurrency

Steem On!

4. Always exchange currency at your destination airport.

Always exchange currency at the airport right after you pass through customs. Even though most stores accept USD and Euros, they can charge “rich Americans” any price they want. Be prepared! Airports have exchange booths with multilingual staff. Unlike local exchange centers, airport exchange rate booths usually follow an official exchange rate and won’t scam you.

5. Always learn three words in the local language: “thank you,” “yes,” and “no.”

The most interesting and exotic locations require the most preparation. Learn phrases in the local language; use free online resources to keep costs down. Research common second languages as well. Just after Croatia started allowing visitors, no one there spoke English. However, everyone spoke German. A few words in common second languages can help.

6. Learn local customs and taboos.

Research customs in every country you will be visiting. For instance, Southeast Asians are gleeful if you empty your plate. Be careful, as they will fill it back up. Best to leave a bit on your plate when you are done.

Learn how to be polite in various cultures. In Cambodia, people smile and bow to welcome visitors; watch their expressions and their hands to see how this is done. Watch the locals’ happy faces when you show that you are trying. It is effort, not perfection, that counts.
Different countries have different taboos as well. Remember that it is their country, not yours, and you don’t want to inadvertently offend anyone. You may be fine with wearing shoes in your home, but if you walk into a Japanese person’s home with your shoes on you are in for a shock.

7. Study the basic history of your destination.

Not only will you appreciate your destination more if you learn about it first; you will also garner more respect from the locals for not being another clueless tourist. You don’t have to become an expert–simply read some online articles or buy a guidebook.

We will continue to post the series this week.
