Peaceful enjoyment at Asticou Azalea Garden in Mount Desert, Maine
Asticou Azalea Garden in Northeast Harbor is adjacent to Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island. There are actually two gardens here, Asticou Azalea Garden and Thuya Garden. Together they provide 1165 acres of beautiful flowers and countless walking and hiking trails around the Long Pond. Mount Desert Land & Garden Preserve is a spectacular place to explore all the hidden gems of this garden preserve.
The American Black ducks are among the many species found in the wetlands of Maine.
The wetlands of Maine make up over 25% of the land mass of the State. Swamps, bogs, marshes, floodplains, and beautiful meadows make up over 5 million acres of freshwater wetlands. You have both wooded swamps and shrub swamps in this category of wetlands. The freshwater meadows are an amazing shade of green and seem to go on forever. There is also another 157,500 acres of tidal flats, salt marshes, aquatic beds, beach bars and reefs. This also includes a great deal of brackish marsh. These salt water wetlands also play an important role in the support of fish and wildlife.
Many of the species of wildlife that do not live in the wetlands feed upon the fish and wildlife of the wetlands. The coastal wetlands are home to clams and mussels. They are also a part year habit to several migratory and coastal birds, including sandpipers, the protected piping plover, and other plovers. The large salt marshes are filled with many species of ducks, including the American Black. The larger species like herons and osprey feed on both the animals of the saltwater and freshwater wetlands. The Bald Eagle is a regular visitor to all wetland types. If you watch, you are also apt to see Muskrats along the banks with their unique houses built from the grasses of the wetlands.
