Mount Katahdin "The Great Mountain"

in #travel7 years ago

Revered by the Penobscot Indians of the  Appalachian Mountain Range.

The State of Maine has many different landscapes. Travel in Maine and you will see small hills and large mountains, mountain streams, green forests, and amazing coastlines.  Maine is beautiful and seems to have it all in one package. The Penobscot Tribe, a large tribe, has it's native roots in what we call Maine today. Early on they were able to adapt and put to use many different parts of the land. "The Great Mountain" was one of the sacred places and they looked to it for much of their food. There was an amazing variety of foods that could be forged on the slopes of this magnificent mountain. Centuries before the State of Maine was created "The Great Mountain" provided, food, shelter, and folklore.

Mount Katahdin  was extremely important in the spiritual life of the Penobscot Tribe.  It was used as a rite of passage for young men who descended upon her slopes to fast for 4 days and receive direction  from the mountain. Folklore abounds about "The Great Mountain." One such story tells of a maiden that married Katahdin and had his child. There are as many versions of this story as their are people who tell it.

If you love nature and adventure, then Mount Katahdin is the place to be. It looms across the State of Maine, providing rivers and streams for those who love to Kayak or Canoe.  Her gentle slopes provide places to play and food for the table. Then also are her beautiful forests, housing for many magnificent large mammals. Whatever you are looking for, you will find it in the" Land Of The Moose."
