Gone Fishing In Northern Maine

Bringing  In The Catch Of The Day

The fishing boats have been cleaned, the nets mended, and the fisherman get a little sleep after a hearty breakfast. As the evening approaches, it is time again to board the boats and depart. The catch will vary depending on the season, but lobster, mackerel, scallops, sardines, and urchin are a few of the favorites.  Soon the bay will be full of commercial fishing boats working to bring in the morning catch of the day.

Each vessel will find his favorite location, be it Cobscook, Fundy, or Passamaquoddy Bay. These three bays will provide a good catch. They fish all night and as the sun rises, they head in to shore and the morning ritual begins. Some fish are sold at the dock, others go to the wholesale fish markets, and still others find their way into local kitchens.

The quaint little fishing village of Lubec, Maine and it's sister village, Eastport, are well known for being Maine's canning capital. But that was before the people no longer desired to buy sardines. A hundred years ago, Lubec, Maine, had as many as 23 sardine factories. There was also a thriving town to meet the needs of all the people who were drawn to Lubec. But as the demand for sardines withered, so did the town. Factories began to close, one by one. Then there was only two and the town began to wither and die.

But now Lubec is indeed getting a new face, a revival of sorts. The boarded businesses are no longer closed. A new fresh coat of paint has dressed the buildings. The town has found a new nitch and the village is full of quaint gift shops, delicious ice cream stands, beautiful Inns, local art galleries, charter boats, museums and a large variety of restaurants fill the village. Lubec has indeed come alive!

Now, among the commercial fishing boats, are also the charter boats that are fast becoming well-known. Tourists have discovered this little fishing village by the bay. Wander on down to the shore and you may see seals playing in the surf. Discover the monuments with quiet reflection, for all those fisherman who did not come home. And when your ready, charter a boat and head on out to the bay to join the others, in the art of fishing.

Makes me want to go visit and do some fishing. Thanks for sharing. :)

Great post @exploretraveler,
Thanks for sharing this post to all of us. ;)

I've never got to the chance to fish there, but younger I went to Old Orchard Beach for a family holiday. We were but kids and my little brother used to call the American state Marine instead of Maine. Your marine attractions-related post has just shown he was not that much off the track after all. :-)
