Much of the hills of New Mexico are made up of old lava flows that are buckled and twisted hills  and in the midst are beautiful grassy prairies.  The mountains have an almost stark beauty and the desert is sandy with cactus and yucca everywhere.

The New Mexico deserts may look barren, are out of this world in the spring when the cactus is blooming. Sprinkled throughout the desert are little towns that are are nestled into the hills and some out in the open deserts themselves.  Crops like hay and alfalfa are commonly grown in desert climates. The plentiful pear cactus is a common fruit at the dinner table and provides many antioxidants and other nutrients. 

When traveling through the high desert areas of New Mexico, do not sell this desert short. You will find a complete ecosystem filled with an amazing variety of wildlife. At first glance, you may see a worthless desert, but take time to explore and you will find beauty, life, and food as part of these desert valleys.  Take a walk in the small towns and villages, as here you will meet warm and friendly people eager to tell you the stories of the area.  This is the perfect setting for a desert adventure, one that the whole family can enjoy.
