Red Delicious Apples In Yakima Valley Washington

Washington, with it's legacy of Apples, thrives with many varieties of the perfect apple. Though places like Eastern Washington are known for it's commercial apple orchards, the whole state is an apple lovers paradise.  Hardly can you go to any town or city, without seeing many varieties growing in the parks and homes of it's residents. People with a little land, often have a small orchard for their own use. Washington, is apple country!

Above is the Red Delicious Apple, with it's shape almost like a heart. This is a snacking apple, not too sweet, and not too sour. It is bright red in appearance, with a few lighter streaks appearing on some of the apples. It is crispy and delicious, perfect for that salad or treat. The Red Delicious Apple is one of the older varieties, dating back into the 1800's. No one is sure where it came from, it just showed up one day as a seedling on a farm in Peru, Iowa. Surely, it has become one of the most desirable apples in the orchard. You have heard it said, "An apple a day, keeps the doctor away." What a perfect apple, to fit the prescription!

Another bright reddish apple is the Gala Apple.  It is almost like a red overlay, on a green apple, and don't forget those pinkish-orange stripes on the top. It is very aromatic. It smells heavenly and is quite a different smell from any other variety. This is one of the newer varieties, arriving on the market in the 1960's from New Zealand. It is nice for snacking and makes those heavenly apple pies. Another awesome choice for that afternoon snack.

Another of Washington's bright red apples is the Fuji. Like the Delicious, it is also very crispy. It is a super sweet variety and many like it as an eating apple. It is most-often used, for apple pies and baked apples, but it also makes a fabulous applesauce. This is also one of the newer varieties on the market, and comes to us from Japan. It is a cross between the Red Delicious apple and the Ralls Janet apple, which are a common variety found in Japan.

Another good eating apple is the Honeycrisp Apple. It is also a sweet apple and very crispy. It is a green apple, with a reddish overlay. The results are a red apple with a few of streaks of green. It is a beautiful apple, quite desirable and has a sweet taste with a tinge of tartness to it. It is used widely in cooking, salads, and for snacking. The Honeycrisp is quiet new on the market, only dating back to the 1990's. It comes to us out of Minnesota. It was bred by crossing the Keepsake Apple with an unknown apple variety. Certainly, it was a pleasant surprise and thrives in the rich volcanic soils of Washington State.

Pure And Abundant Mountain Spring Water With Volcanic Soil Produce Awesome Apples

The last of the major apple varieties commercially grown in Washington is the Granny Smith Apple.  This is a tart, crispy green apple that is loved for snacking by those who like a touch of tartness.  It is a long-time favorite of cooks and bakers and is used for everything, including salads. This is an older apple, dating back to the mid-1800's, and is believed to have been cultivated from French Crabapples in Australia.

The next time you reach for one of these mouthwatering tasty apples, think about the state where apples are a state treasure. and venture on out west. An apple adventure is waiting each fall. They are the perfect treat to begin or end any busy day of exploration.
