Vologda. Sodima is overflowed

in #travel4 years ago

Zolotuha (Sodima) is a river in the Vologda region of Russia, the right tributary of the Vologda River. It flows through the territory of the Vologda region and within the city of Vologda. Outside the city this river is called Sodema (or Sodima), and in the city - Zolotuha.

The modern section of the river from the Church of St. Nicholas on Glinka to the place where it flows into Vologda was dug southeast of the Vologda Kremlin by captured Tatars, Turks and Lithuanians on the orders of Ivan the Terrible as a moat. The current channel was built in 1568: "The Great Sovereign Tsar Ivan Vasilyevich ordered the shovels Shogrash, Sodemka and Zolotuha river...".

For the first time the name “Zolotuha” as a water stream in a ravine is found in historical sources in 1608 in the “Diary of Marina Mnishek”, compiled by an unknown Pole, who was held in Vologda among other hostages.

The etymology of the name is unknown. According to one version, it is due to the fact that the captured Tatars (the Golden Horde) dug up Zolotuha (zoloto means gold). According to another version, the work was very expensive. In addition, there was a legend among the people that earlier they “washed” (mined) gold in the river.

More than a dozen bridges were built through Zolotuha, including Vedeneevsky, Winterovsky, Myasnoryadsky, Kamenny and Rybnoryadsky. The streets of Vologda cross the river: Petina, Yaroslavskaya, Novgorodskaya, District highway.

For 150 meters it flows in a reinforced concrete pipe under the parking lot of the Oasis Shopping Center and Mira Street. The river is considered polluted, swimming in it is prohibited.
