My city is the Great Ustyug!

Great Ustyug is a city in the North-East of the Vologda region. Founded in 1147, the same age as Moscow and Vologda. The city is located at the confluence of the rivers of Sukhona and the South (Yug), where the river Nothern Dvina is formed. The name Ustyug originated from the ancient Ust-yug, which indicates its location. The status of "Great" (Velikiy - in russian) it received for his role in history and commercial value. Ivan "Terrible" the 4th included him in the number of oprichnih cities and for him at that time the epithet was established.

Since 1999, the city is declared the birthplace of the All-Russian Father Frost and is a major tourist center.

Great Ustyug often suffers from floods because of the complex geographic location of rivers. The largest floods were in 1991, 1998, 2005, 2013, 2016. It was decided to build a protective dam around the city.

During the Soviet era, the Sukhona River was a navigable river, it was fused with wood and transported by barge. For this purpose, the riverbed was cleaned every year, dredging was carried out. Now the river in the middle of summer dries up so that it can be moved through in some places. Because of this, floods became more frequent and became stronger. Dredging after the flood in 2016 was resumed.

The city of Veliky Ustyug has not only the historical part of the city, but also the usual sleeping areas of brick five-story buildings and two-story wooden houses. Above five floors does not allow you to build due to swampy terrain.

The only bridge in the region across the Sukhona River, connecting several areas. In 1986, after the construction and commissioning, one span collapsed. No harm done. At that time there were not so many cars and it happened early in the morning.

It is worth mentioning about such an unusual phenomenon for our city as the northern lights. In 2015, from 17 to 18 March, there was a strong magnetic storm. Aurora shimmered with all the colors of the rainbow and lasted this light show all night!

In general, the city of Veliky Ustyug is a quiet provincial place with its beauty and its problems that all Russian cities have. I was born here and have lived for many years. There were moments when I wanted to leave, but I never left his native city. Needed where was born! Love your Motherland!
