Travel with me #4: Marienplatz - the heart of Munich.

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

Dear Steemit friends and followers!

Marienplatz is the main attraction of the city. It was here that I came, on New Year's Eve, to feel the real Bavarian spirit and look at the figures in human growth that rotate on the tower of the New Town Hall to the battle of the clock.

Who was not on Marienplatz in Munich, he did not see this Germany....

Now, I try to often look at this square, and every time my mood becomes festive. But what amazes me most is that many of the latter speak excellent Russian.

Marienplatz

From Marienplatz to all major city attractions you can walk slowly. It is from here that it is most convenient to begin acquaintance with the city. But to start a little history.

In 1158, Henry Leo founded the city of Munich, whose center was the Marienplatz.

In those old days it bore the name "Shranenplatz" (which means the grain market), it sold cereals. And in the place where the fish fountain is now, they traded fish, and this place was called Fishmarkt. The fish were then stored in a fountain, so as not to deteriorate. The water structure was destroyed during the war; after it was reconstructed, but in a different way.

There were also various fairs, knight tournaments and even executions on the square.

The square received its present name thanks to the column of Mary, which is located in the center. A golden female figure with a baby in her arms looks so that you involuntarily stop to look at her.

The column is dedicated to the patroness of the city, the Virgin Mary. It was installed after the Swedish invasion, which occurred during the war of the XVII century.

The Virgin Mary with a baby in her arms stands high, looks far and sees everything that happens not only on Marienplatz square, but also in the district. For example, she sees that next to the market Viktualienmarkt sell delicious Bavarian sausages, which were previously sold on the square, which in turn was a market area.
Today Marienplatz is the main venue for all religious festivals. It often hosts all kinds of concerts and performances. Here you can meet artists of different genres.

But the main idea, which gathers crowds of tourists, is a parade of dolls on the clock of the New Town Hall. You can see a small play in which the scenes of the knight tournament are played during the wedding of Wilhelm V with Renata Lotharginskaya. The performance starts at 11.00 and 12.00 on the sound of 3 bells and lasts about ten minutes.

Many tourists gather to see how they strike, and figures the size of a person move, depicting scenes of Bavarian life.
The performance lasts a few minutes and resembles a puppet show. If you do not see well, then take your glasses or binoculars with you, because at this height the figures look small.

The building of the New Town Hall

What did not happen on the Marienplatz in the whole history of its existence. For example, on the day of St. John the Baptist the youth frolicked in the square, jumping over the fire. And, of course, there were executions in the square. In those days it was the most popular spectacle.

In addition to the New Town Hall on Marienplatz there is also the Old Town Hall. She looks a little more modest, but also looks interesting. Today in the tower of the Old Town Hall is a toy museum.
It is worth noting that in April 1944 Munich was razed to the ground and all the buildings, including the Marienplatz, are now a novelty.

Old Town Hall

From the Marienplatz square in Munich, there are several main streets. These are Weinstraße, Kaufingerstraße, Rosenstraße and Rindermarkt. Street Kaufingerstraße, is a pedestrian street with many shops, boutiques and beer restaurants. It leads to the Karlsplatz square towards the main railway station. Near the Old Town Hall is the market Viktualienmarkt.

How to get there

The Marienplatz square in Munich is located in the heart of the pedestrian zone.

The square can be reached by metro (lines U3 and U6), as well as by city train (lines S1-S8, except S5) to Marienplatz station.

I will say at once that the German city electric trains are much more comfortable than Russian ones and travel according to the schedule, which you can see on the scoreboard (the direction, ie the terminal station) is indicated. On them you will quickly reach the right place, than by car.

Hotels close to Marienplatz

Do you intend to stay in the heart of Munich? Be prepared for the fact that it will cost you a pretty big sum.

Hotels in Munich in the center next to Marienplatz, of course, a lot. But their pricing policy is much tougher than in other parts of the city. The average price of hotels per night is 80 euros.
But if you are so principally located next to this place, you can choose a hostel for less money.

I advise you to visit the Marienplatz! In addition, if you decide to come to Germany in winter, then you can not only admire the views of the square, but also drink here a cup of warming fragrant mulled wine.
