Olvia. The historical and archaeological reserve in Ukraine.
Olvia is one of the Greek colonies on the territory of modern Ukraine, founded in the first quarter of VI BC. E. Today it is a national historical and archaeological reserve, in which excavations are still conducted. It is located near the village of Parutino in the Mykolayiv region.
A bit of history about the ancient Greek polis Olbia
During its heyday, Olbia was an important trading center, fishing and winemaking.
Over time, the Greek population was naturally replaced by Cimmerians and Scythians. The first description of the geography, history and customs of local residents was made by Herodotus.
Olvia in 331 BC unsuccessfully tried to conquer one of the generals of Alexander the Great - Zopiri, but already in 55 BC. The policy was conquered by the Getty king Burebista. Later, Olvia resumed its existence, but in a much smaller territory. In 198 AD. It was annexed to the Roman Empire, and after the invasion of the Huns in the 70's. Ceased to exist.
National Historical and Archaeological Reserve Olbia
Systematic excavations on the territory of Olbia began in the first half of the twentieth century. Today the reserve is part of the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Students-historians are regularly sent here to practice. In Olbia, robots are still being carried out to preserve and restore archaeological finds, as well as to protect areas that can be destroyed by the estuary waters.
When to go and how to get to the territory
To inspect the reserve you can come from May to September. They say that the most interesting here in May - the steppe is very beautiful. And in July-August, archeological expeditions are equipped here.
What to see in Olbia
The area is certainly not as colorful as in Chersonesos, but there is something to see. The reserve consists of an ancient settlement and a necropolis, and also the island of Berezan is included in the composition.
Participation in the archaeological expedition
It would be a desire, you can arrange an active-cognitive rest and join a group of archaeologists. Of course, you will not be allowed to enter important excavations, but simple jobs will be completely trusted to you, you always need free hands. Yes, and right before your eyes will work masters of their business with brushes and brushes, and perhaps very important findings will be found.
