Holidays in The Netherlands #3 The Castle of Ammersoyen

in #travel7 years ago

Today we visited the Castle of Ammersoyen, which is located in the west of the province of Gelderland in The Netherlands, close to the city of the small village of Ammerzoden. The construction of the castle started in the year 1300 and consisted of four wings around a courtyard and four fortified towers at each corner. The whole castle is surrounded by a moat.

The castle was under siege several times but never captured. The biggest damage came from a fire in the year 1590 which destroyed the castle almost completely. It was restored in 1648 so nobody lived in the castle for almost 50 years. After 500 years of being in private property the castle was sold to a group of nuns in 1876 and was sealed off for the outside world so the nuns could pray and contemplate.

Nowadays the castle is owned by a foundation and it's open for the public to visit. It is very well preserved and indeed a place worthwhile visiting. It is also a location that is often used for marriages and parties.
