Ocean Wildlife, Surfers, and Boaters at First and Third Beach (Forks, Washington)

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

The other day we explored the shockingly violent and beautiful Second (Rialto) beach today I take you to First and Third Beach in La Push- near Forks- Washington.

Unfortunately it was overcast for the majority of the time we spent in this wondrous place, though I can't complain as it didn't rain even once in a location that is so well known for precipitation that I was told by a local that she was concerned about so many days without rain in a row. So concerned in fact, she stated she was going to do a rain dance!

So the only time I got a blue sky view of this beach was on the first day from a lookout point on the road-

However, everything you see here was still absolutely gorgeous in majestic in person- though I fear it did not translate quite as well in film.

I'm not sure if I mentioned this in the first post, but aside from the water being treacherous (particularly at Second beach) it was also really cold, too cold for us to swim. But we did see a man in a wetsuit attempting to catch some waves-

As you can see here, unlike Second beach, Third beach is comprised of sand, something I'm far more accustomed to seeing in relation to the ocean.

But it still has the rocks out in the water that is a new sight for me. This formation makes me think of druids.

We spent a good portion of our time here exploring this rock wall...

....which was full of ocean and beach wildlife, most of which I've never seen outside of television or a National Geographic magazine.

Naturally Ethan and I couldn't resist climbing to the top of the wall.

The still waters provided a cool contrast to the ocean waves on the other side,

where the rocks looked like miniature island mountains.

Any rock climbers out there? I feel if I were a rock climber checking out the top of this would be a dream.

I thought I had taken pictures of this, but I can't find them so I'll just tell you about it.

In order to get to First and Third Beach you have to drive through the Quillete Reservation in La Push. On our way through we stopped at a house boasting fresh smoked Salmon, and they had a reason to boast- it was fantastic. And there were signs for something else on the way down as well- signs I found a little frightening in fact as they marked the Tsunami Escape Route.

That there have been enough Tsunamis to warrant these permanent signs made me worry for the residents of this place. This is the trade-off it seems for living in the most beautiful and/or wild places on this earth

We are almost finished with our tour of this Northwestern Coastal town, stay tuned for the final stops including the Quillayute River and tourism!

Gorgeous photos @dreemit! I would love you see the West coast. Some day soon I'd like to fly into San Diego and rent a convertible and drive up the coast.

Thank you Eric! If you have that opportunity than I absolutely recommend going North to South on Route 101 through Oregon. There are so many overlooks you miss out on if you go up instead of down as we did. That whole coast is just spectacular either way---

I still have to do an in depth Oregon post, we stayed in Newport which was really neat coastal town :-)

That's a good tip to travel South! Flying into Seattle sounds like it'd be best. This looks like an epic trip!

Yes, definitely make Seattle your starting point! Taking that trip in a convertible will be amazing! At some point we want to do it on a motorcycle, it's actually a bucket list item for my husband that we cross the country on one- I've never learned to drive one, but I'm an excellent rider haha ;-)

The best of everything is there beautiful time to enjoy along the beach side :)
