Airbnb Cracks Down On London And Amsterdam Rentals

in #travel8 years ago

Airbnb recently announced (for the 1st time) that they were going to enforce a new legal limit on the amount of nights that a property can be rented within a year. They announced the new rules in regards to the properties in both London and Amsterdam. Now the accommodation website is going to ban entire homes from being rented out beyond a specific limit.

Now property owners can only rent out their own property spaces for a maximum of 60 days within 1 year, unless there is a license allowing the property owner to do otherwise.

Airbnb continues to see resistance from hotel groups and a number of different city governments around the world. We have seen this in a number of cases, like with the newly announced rules for London and Amsterdam, that Airbnb is trying to work with city officials to get along. And that isn't all, there are also a number of people who are blaming Airbnb for the continued rise in housing costs, they say that owners are resorting to Airbnb rather than choosing to rent to individuals who live locally. And they've also taken to protesting against the company.

Airbnb has also wound-up engaged in lawsuits with both New York and San Francisco officials. A San Francisco judge recently tossed the lawsuit out; denying the company the chance to sue the city. The company also settled its lawsuit with New York, but the battle might not be over just yet. Despite a number of jurisdictions trying to prohibit the success of the business, it's still flourishing; just this year alone they are forecast to have over $10 billion in bookings.

Good. Being overly successful can be a trap.
And a lot of people abused Airbnb, cheating taxes and regulations that were there for a good reason.

Another example of a favorite to the good-doers, which now shows its ugly side.

cheating taxes? guess that's less money to be spent on debt to foreign banks and on never-ending wars overseas. I am not a big fan of a mob trying to infringe/initiate violence between peaceful parties that are simply making voluntary exchanges which benefit both parties.

the amount of money is irrelevant, as one injustice will never justify another one.
if you want a fair market, same conditions will need to apply.
that means rules for commercial applications in airbnb that correspond to other likewise business.
especially on "hot" markets like london, space for rent is scarce. why should people, who hire out their flats regularly pay less taxes than others who make a living in the same biz?

taking something that doesn't belong to you and advocating for theft via the state actually IS injustice..... sorry you fail to recognize it. A fair market isn't one where people are coerced but rather it's quite the opposite, it's an environment where people are FREE to make voluntary exchanges without the initiation of violence from some mob against them.

Again, I object.
Any market mechanism needs a common ground. No matter how weird or unfair these conditions are deemed, they should apply to all the partipants. Else there is no competition and you and up with either cartells or socialism. Or even a mixture, which is probably worst.
As to contributions. thats a nice idea. But looking at the reality of fundraising and big donations, its largely about buying influence. Not directly, as in corruption. Its far more indirect. Getting to talk to the right people in the right conditions. Many unwritten and unspoken rules involved. About having the right friends. About your family having the right friends. About status in a certain group and club. And - very casually - placing information. Inception.
Seen a bit of it and it still makes me want to throw up.
Theft is harmless in comparison.
