Beautiful view of Taj Mahal Palace Hotel & The Gateway of India from the Arabian Sea
The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel is a five-star hotel located in Mumbai infront of Gateway of India, Maharashtra, India. It was also known as "Taj Mahal Hotel" or "Taj Palace Hotel"
It contains 560 rooms and 44 suites which is part of the Taj hotels resorts and palaces. There are some 1,600 staff including 35 butlers.
Jamsetji Tata decided to build the hotel after he was refused entry and not allowing to one of the grand hotels of the time in the city, It was Watson's Hotel, there black people not allowed, it was only for whites. However, this story has been challenged by some commentators that suggest that Tata was unlikely to have been concerned with 'revenge' against his British adversaries.
The original Indian architects were both Sitaram Khanderao Vaidya and D. N. Mirza. And the project was completed by an English engineer. The builder was Khansaheb Sorabji Ruttonji Contractor who also designed and built its famous central floating staircase.
The cost of construction was £250,000 it was £127 million in 2008 prices.
Taj Hotel was specifically chosen by Lashkar-e-Taiba for an attack. The hotel was attacked on 26 November 2008, during which hotel was mostly damaged, including the destruction of the hotel's roof. During attack at least 167 people were killed, in which mostly were foreigners. Approximately 450 people were staying in the Taj Mahal Palace and Hotel at the time of the attack. The attack was planned using information compiled by David Headley who is a Pakistani-American, who had stayed at the hotel several times.
