On my way back home from the north rim of the Grand Canyon I headed through Death Valley and over to the eastern Sierra Nevada mountains. After a long day of exploring in Death Valley I arrived late at the Sage Flat trailhead and spent the night there. Some friends were supposed to meet me there in the morning to climb Olancha peak(12,132'), but a snowstorm hit that night and none of them showed up. So I set off solo on the long climb up through the snow.

I headed up and over Olancha pass and through summit meadows. Then I met with the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail) and followed it to the west face of the mountain and made my way up the icy talus to the summit.

It was an awesome day, climbing through the snow and up into the clouds near the peak. Then while I was sitting on the summit the clouds began to clear, opening up all the amazing huge views!! Looking north to the high country of Mt. Langley and Mt. Whitney, south over the South Sierra wilderness, west over the Kern Plateau, and east over Owens Valley and even all the way out to Telescope peak in Death valley. Days like this are what I live for.

After enjoying my time on the summit I headed down. I got down the west face and then the sun went down when I was around the PCT junction and I did the last of the hike in the dark. It was a fun adventure, long and rough, but so much fun!

Looks awesome! Great pics!!

Thanks! I'm glad you like my photos. It was a great adventure.

Nice pix!!

Thanks!

You should check out #walkwithme ... it's a project started by @lyndsaybowes ... I think your pictures and style would do great there.

Thanks for the info Dave! I just checked it out. Very cool, I like it. I'm now following Lyndsay and will definitely participate in #walkwithme.

I love the PCT, but you are braver than me to bag the Peak alone.

I enjoy solo trips. Less worries and more focus. I enjoy taking others as well, and I try to whenever possible because I love showing people these kinds of awesome places, but then there is also more responsibilities and more distractions. It's a trade off and I can go either way. As long as I'm out in the mountains I'm happy.

Amazing dude, just amazing. Not only the photos, but the fact you've hit so many peaks in Cali. I think maybe Feb/March I'd be ready to do Panamint.

Thanks man. I'm a peakaholic. lol. Just climbed 3 more last week. 2 in northern Yosemite and 1 out of Big Pine. Feb/March should be perfect for Panamint city.

Wow, epic pictures and great profile @derekrichardson! I'm now following you... greetings from a fellow adventurer!

Exactly! Thats what I say every time I climb a peak in the Sierra Nevada.

I like it...beautiful..

The Sierra Nevada mountains are incredibly beautiful. Glad you like the photos!

It's very cool, a long time ago I did not go to the mountains ...

Why not? The mountains are amazing. Do you like going to the mountains now days? I love exploring the all the wild places in the mountains.

Nice. What mountain ranges do you like there in Russia, I know there are a lot of them. Here in California we have some spectacular mountain ranges. If you ever come to California we could go hiking sometime! I know all the best spots.
