Kamakura Buddha - Day trip from Tokyo

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

The Giant Buddha at Kamakura in Japan, is one of the 3 Giant Buddha's around the world that people visit as a type of Pilgrimage. It only takes around 1.5 hours on the train from Tokyo, and it is an awe inspiring experience to see this 12th Century National Treasure. The Bronze Statue is over 13 meters tall, and was originally cast in 1252 AD, and weighs is over 90 tonnes. That in itself is a mind blowing thing to consider, how could they have have been so advanced to be able to make a metal alloy statue of this size and detail. You think of where they had got to, in technology in Europe at that time, and you can see how much more advanced the Japanese had been.

Originally the Kamakura Buddha was housed in a Temple, however that was destroyed by a Tidal Wave in 1495, so since then the Kamakura Buddha has been outside in the open. There is also a Temple complex at the site now. Before this Statue was built there was a Giant Buddha made from Wood, this was destroyed in 1248, so a leading Buddhist Priest called Joko suggested having one made from Bronze. The Statue was originally gilded with Gold Leaf, of which there are still traces that can be seen.

Wow! Amazing statue of Buddha. I noticed that his hand mudra is somewhat unique. In most of the statues that I have seen here in India, Buddha puts his one palm over the other and therefore the four of the fingers overlap each other.
In this statue the four of the fingers are not overlapped, but they are facing in opposite direction.

it is good you notice the details and i like you coming to comment
