Getting My Feet Wet
I’ve been meaning to plug the GoPro into the iPad since we got the things but techy-type stuff has always intimidated me. Well, I’m finally doing it, I’m typing with the iPad for the first time right now. Did you know the factory keyboard on these things is inoperable when the iPad is plugged into a case that’s equipped with an external keyboard? I didn’t know that! I did, however, manage to transfer all 52 images from the GoPro to the icon where photos go this thing, trust me, it’s a pivotal moment—my first experience with a device other than my phone. I haven’t tried signing into #steemit with it yet but that shouldn’t be a problem. Ultimately, we’ll record Pura Vida’s cooking, do all of the video editing stuff like time lapse and add music, etc. but we’re not there yet—baby steps.
@puravidaville and I went to Casa Orquidea yesterday, a 12 acre jardin botanico (botanical garden) on the Oso Penninsula in Playa San Josecito, Costa Rica. It’s only accessible by boat. You’ll leave Golfito Bay due north toward the Pacific Ocean on a 20 minute boat ride through Drake Bay, named after Sir Francis Drake who many believe left behind treasure as he sailed across the Atlantic, around South America and up through Costa Rica in search of North America in the 1500’s. We didn’t see an shiny precious metals in the sea but we saw a lot more than I expected—it was gorgeous out there! We even saw the property owner hand pollinate vanilla—the only flower that requires hand pollination. I began taking pictures at sun rise, continued during the walk to the pier, entering the boat, etc. picture, picture, picture, picture, 52 of them, all taken with a GoPro Hero 5 Black. It’s the only device I took with me, forcing myself to get a feel for it. It has three different settings for photos: wide, narrow, and linear, I alternated between all three—this is what we saw:
Like the beginning of most adventures, we need an ATM:
Exterior view of the bathroom, complete with a sink and an outdoor shower:
What the view would look like from inside the bathroom if you were a lady:
You'll notice quite a few signs identifying the medicinal uses for the majority of these plants:
You can just barely see Pura Vida off to the right—this was a massive tree that shaded quite a bit of ground:
This is the vanilla pollinating process—I had no idea. You have to gently open the bud of the flower with a toothpick, expose the pollen and then stick it back to itself—now its pollinated. You have three hours a day when this process is possible, between 8am and 11am, otherwise the flower dies and falls off of the branch. Once pollinated, a vanilla bean will grow over the next eight weeks—now I know why vanilla is so expensive:
Tada!
Pineapple
A lot of pineapple:
We made our way back toward shore, had a cup of coffee while waiting for the boat to return and went for the 20 minute boat ride back to Golfito Bay:
GoPro #adventure numero uno en Costa Rica: Decent WiFi is a must—noted! It’ll be a little bit before I’m ready for the big screen but I’m happy with the start, “progress.” Happy hump day!
Very cool and interesting photos, @dandays. I never tried a GoPro camera but I think I prefer a normal camera anyway. That fisheye effect messes a bit with my mind. 😂
Thanks for sharing.
Right on, trincowski, I’m glad you liked this one. Happy Easter. Yeah, I agree with you, that wide angle view is pretty weird. I’m not sure where that view would be beneficial. I have an idea then—I’ll try to figure the thing out for both of us and keep you posted. 👍🏿
Thanks a lot for stopping by, @trincowski.
Great tour babe- that was awesome!
On my iPad I have both the hard case keyboard and the factory on screen keyboard.
Nice vacation. I enjoyed all the pictures. The water is my favorite.
Oh, perfect! I was hoping someone would come hold my hand, is it just a setting I need to adjust? ...I’m such a nerd.
Every day is a vacation, sir, I’m the luckiest guy I know. I think I like the water ones, too, though that pond of Lilly pads is pretty cool.
Thanks for stopping by @wolfhart.
My keyboard has a button across the top row. Looks like a keyboard that if I hit it then the screen keyboard pops up.
I don’t know crap about this stuff. I have to consult with my son.
I have this case I got from amazon and it doesn’t have that keyboard icon. I knew I should’ve gone with the Apple product—danget! What it does is, restricts me from typing lower case letters. I can’t type lower case for code, parenthesis, nada. Bo00Ooo
Ohhh I see. That sucks.
I have more buttons on here then on my computer.
You don’t know enough when you buy these gadgets , because you don’t how to use them. then you are limited in what you can do with them.
I would take a class on how to do all this but that would take a 4 years study.
Every time I use my GoPro I try and zoom in.... which doesn’t work too well. I haven’t spent much time fiddling around with mine, all the setting and stuff. I just know the basics.
Uploading to D.tube is pretty straight forward. Getting your “snap” aka thumbnail is the part that got me for a while.
Hand pollinating??? That is crazy!! Plus only a 3 hour window!!! Remind me not to grow vanilla beans any time soon.
Thanks for taking us all with you on your little adventure and for all those photos.
Cheers!!

Not sure how I missed this comment brother. 🤔
Yeah I have no idea about what you’re talking about zooming in on the camera and using your thumb and index finger to make the screen bigger like you would your phone—nope, none! I’ve never done that every time I look at the screen or anything.
What do you mean thumbnail?
Thanks for stopping by, @jlsplatts. You know what day it is?!
Your thumbnail is the picture that everyone sees on the post. You know the images that represent the video? They have to be a certain size. I use make a photo then use thumbnail maker to get it the right size.

I had a great time reading and looking at the pics :)
That’s so cool, @shemzee, thank you! I’m glad you liked it. I’m looking forward to learning how to post a video to Dtube. “Baby steps.”
Thanks for stopping by, @shemzee.
Whoa....awesome adventure!
Hello dandays, how are you I just got your post today after a few days you didn't post. Are you busy traveling, friend? Your trip is very beautiful and challenging. The photo of the photo you are displaying is also very good. You are a true adventure, friend.
You’re such a sweetheart, you Indonesian ladies are the sweetest people on steemit—that’s a fact!
Yeah, posting every day last week was a first for me, the most I typically post in one week is three, commonly just two and, when we’re in an area as hot and humid as it is here, we don’t get out much to document our travels other than an occasional trip to the market or to reload our cell phone minutes. But it’s so hot and we’re both so sweaty by then, we are just looking to get what we need and get out, we aren’t thinking pictures. 😉
Thanks for stopping by, @elianaelisma. What’s going on in your part of the world today, do you have any exciting plans?

@steemitboard. I’m missing my 7 days in a row one.
Mother-in-law's Tongue--I thought that caused sores, not healed them?? 😉
Looks like a cool way to spend the day. I would totally be trying to steal some pineapple, though I still haven't tried fresh jack fruit yet either. I think I've heard that tidbit about vanilla before. Totally nuts that it is that challenging to get vanilla pregnant!
I like some of the shots of the water from the boat. Though I think my favorite thing about this post is looking forward (however far in the future) to @puravidaville cooking demo vids!! Yes! Maybe some day I'll get there, but my kitchen is 1960's ugly, so I'm not always keen on highlighting it, haha.
Enjoy basking in that starry light this week sir! You deserve it!
You’re too kind, plantstoplanks, thanks for being cool. Eh, guess what?! I just typod your name wrong and autocorrect fixed it.. huh? Huh? Now what?!
Yes! I’m with you on the favorite part, filming her cooking. I’m sure you’ve seen the same things online she watches, right? You know what I’m talking about. Putting those videos together looks like so much fun! The wheels are spinning.
Thanks for stopping by, @plantstoplanks. I look at the pictures now and think I should’ve used the Lilly pad one as the cover. It was a good day out there.
