Im from South Africa, and no,its not what you think...
We usually find people having this misconception of South Africa, mostly those who have not visited the country yet . So I've compiled a few facts about living in South Africa.
- We all live in huts
Nope, we actually live in houses made from bricks. We sometimes pay to live in a 'hut' like structure when going on a getaway or weekend away and sometimes it is a 5star establishment.
- We are all poor
Poverty is an issue in South Africa and it goes had in hand with our high unemployment rate, but we have the poor, middle class and rich like every other country in the world.
- We are one with the animals
Probably the biggest misconception thus far. Yes we are fortunate enough to have the Big Five, but we also have to go on game drives and the zoo to see wildlife. In South Africa we hardly have free roaming wildlife and the types of free roaming wildlife is limited. Our pets mostly consists of dogs and cats, not lions. We do get the odd lion making the news for a traffic violation, but 99% of the time its a no.
- The whole continent of Africa knows each other
Emphasis on the word continent, I live in South Africa which is a country in Africa the continent. So the chances of that happening would be never
- We don't have electricity
We enjoy the odd candle lit dinner every now and then, but only for the ambiance. Yes there is a few places in South Africa without electricity and running water, which is sad but the misconception that the whole of South Africa is without electricity is a bit far fetched. We use cell phones, laptops and we even have Wi-Fi and TV's and electric cars. So rest assured we do have electricity, oh and running water from taps in our homes. Not rivers
Hope this post clears up most misconceptions about this beautiful country and it is well worth the visit. It promises an awesome and unique experience matter what part of the world you are from!
