Otaru - Canals and Brewery

Otaru is a small harbor city, about half an hour northwest of Sapporo by train. Its beautifully preserved canal area and interesting herring mansions make Otaru a pleasant day trip from Sapporo.

After spending the morning walking the Canal area I stopped off at Otaru beer factory and had a pint. The brewery had a mini tour that explained the brewing process and history of Otaru.

Nikka Whiskey Distillery

My next stop was the Nikka Whiskey Distillery in Yoichi. It's a pretty cool place to check out and you get free whiskey tasting at the end which was basically all you can drink samples of all their whiskey and ciders. I spent at least an hour here getting my fill. I still can't believe they didn't charge for the tasting.

Yoichi Fisherman House

My last stop was "Old Shimoyoichi Unjoya" which was an old Japanese fisherman house. It had lifelike mannequins that were a little freaky.

Conveyor Belt Sushi

On the way home I stopped off at Nagoyakatei and got conveyor belt sushi. The sushi rides on a converybelt and you grab what you want. Just stack up your plates at the end to get your bill.
