Adventure Day: Part 3 of 4, The Elementary School for Odd People [Travel]
Picking up from where we left on, let's continue the journey to the next destination on my #crazy #adventure day. Sister offered to take me to a location I have been wanting to explore for quite some time, but never actually visited. She wanted to take her son with us, and we would go there to watch the latest children's #sci-fi movie, A Wrinkle in Time.
All photos in the post will be #originalworks. You'll even see a rare sneak peak of the author @creativetruth at the end.
Welcome to Kennedy Elementary School. Formerly a real school in #Portland, #Oregon. Now it is converted into an entertaining tourist destination with a hotel and movie theater, and various other surprises awaiting to be found.
When we first got there, we were already a little bit late, so we raced down a hallway that turned three times. Up ramps, stairs, and around strange curiosities hiding in dark corners. Strange things no normal person would put on display inside their home or business.
This #labyrinth was easy to get in. Getting out, is another story.
We peered into the doorway of an old #classroom and found ourselves greeted by a concession stand. This is where they sell tickets to the movie, along with drinks, popcorn, pizza, and bread-sticks. They offer full dinner deserve to guests while watching the movie. They bring it out to you.
On the wall behind us, a decorative #mural was made with #chalk to highlight the attraction we came to see.
Beware the curtains. We all got pretty tangled up inside of it. It is a double row of curtains. If you have your hands full of popcorn and drinks, you have to use your elbow to slide the curtain to the side, rather than walk through. It was pretty funny seeing my sister and nephew trying to push their way under, only to get dark cloth strangling around their heads, so I had to help them out.
Take your pick.
Every guest can choose their favorite sofa or easy chair.
My kind of school!
Everything is space out nicely inside. No danger of tripping over people in the dark. Plenty of room for tables to hold drinks and food. Free refills, as long as you were willing to walk back to the concession stand during the film. I kept bending over, because I didn't want my head to get in the way of the projector, but it is high enough that you can stand full height, even though it looks very low.
We finished the movie. It wasn't all that impressive actually.
This location, however is something else entirely different. As most people rushed for the women's bathroom with their children, I began to survey my surroundings.
The old benches look like pews from a church.
What is this dog-dragon thing? It looks like something that belongs inside a Chinese museum. Strange oddities like this in every hallway, constantly remind me that this school is not meant to be perceived as a normal historical location. It has been transformed into another dimension of history. You'll see what I mean.
Even though the back door is bathed in light, the hall remains a dull glow.
A weird snake decorates the walls near the ceiling.
Nothing strange here.
A couple devilish puppets honoring education, while couples dance romantically.
Every wall was covered in murals. This one was more appealing to me.
A double drinking fountain?
How could this be a good idea? Bonking heads. Squirting water. Children at play.
Ladders went up to a secret space up above. The roof? An attic? An upward fire-escape?
This fantasy mural is a lot like The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, a popular children's fantasy novel by C. S. Lewis. Probably that was a best-selling book during the time this mural was painted in this old #school.
A narrow #door, with a bolt #lock, and #cast-iron #hinges.
This is where all the naughty kids are locked up when they misbehave.
The ominous lie worried my little nephew, and he asked if this was true.
No of course not, I'm just kidding.
I hope not.
This #bench has ends that look like #violins.
Together again, we explored the rest of this domain.
Was my camera truly this blurry? I'm sorry, I must have been caught in a time warp.
Here, visitors are greeted at the information booth, now acting a check-in #lobby for #hotel guests.
The old #patio area the school branches around is open for full lunch and dinner service, and private parties. I recall seeing members of a band unloading instruments, perhaps setting up for a concert here later on.
The indoor portion of the #restaurant hosts dozens of guests.
Are we still inside an #elementary school?
Yes. Each #doorway is a portal to another dimension. According to A Wrinkle In Time, they call this form of world-travelling tessering. Didn't know it was so easy.
Go ahead an hit it.
Gooooong!
The entrance lobby has a small gift shop nearby.
The teachers used this as a rest room area, and it was also where the custodians could manage the sprinkler system and plumbing for the entire building.
An old #chandelier.
I am guessing this is not an original item. It very much fits the theme of the background #ambiance: Spooky-Ritzy.
The sun outside never makes it past the layer of #windows. The ghost lights live inside this glass wall. Darkness beckons its guests to stay inside, away from the harmful daylights.
Let's see what else we can find. There is still much to #explore.
Report to the Detention Center immidiately. You need to sober up your attitude.
Yes Ma'am.
Give me your worst. I've been very bad, Mr. Bartender.
A mural showing young #girls in uniform playing with the #ribbons of the #maypole.
This used to be a popular event for #children and at festivals, yet I have never seen it happen in my lifetime. An anomaly.
Don't go that way! Never go that way!
This hallway has been closed off.
It leads straight to the brewing room.
Not far from the Boiler Room.
This room is build like a loft, with pipes everywhere. The billiards table is a great way to let off some steam.
This wooden doorway is now a decorative piece of #art on the wall. Once a #gateway to another fantastic destination.
Through the looking glass, we found the area known as the Sitting #Pool. A great place to relax and stay warm in the sun, while children laugh and gawk at you from above.
There were many #comical murals like this one. Some so creepy, I didn't want to have its likeness burned into my camera's memory. I'm not that cruel that I would leave my followers to suffer #nightmares.
We explored outside a bit, and it was harder to find our way around. I turned around looking to see where the back way went, and my sister was looking out to make sure I didn't get lost.
Can't go out that way. It's locked.
Nobody escapes this place.
The #garden near the parking lot looked like a fun place for a photo op. My nephew wanted to show off a funny #face.
We found a #desert rock garden, filled with weird and interesting #plants. These are not your common garden varieties.
A #cactus? In our climate?
There was also a strange stickery plant that was surprisingly soft like cats fur.
A oddly shaped weeping conifer en-wreaths the entrance columns.
Welcome to Kennedy Elementary School.
Glad you made it out alive.
Do come again.
@creativetruth and nephew celebrating #life and #freedom.
