The hill of Monserrate is the best known of the Eastern hills of Bogota. Next to Guadalupe is one of the tutelary hills of the city. Monserrate has an altitude of 3152 m and is located on the eastern mountain range. The hills of Bogota, of sedimentary origin, are at least 16 million years old, with rocks of Cretaceous age belonging to the Guadeloupe Group, as far as the geological aspect is concerned. Until the mid-17th century it was known as Las Nieves hill.
