There are a lot of great trails to hike in southern Illinois and the Shawnee Forest, and I have been up and down on the river to river trail and several smaller ones like horse trails that weave in and out the major ones. This is my first trip up the tunnel hill trail and I have always liked the old rail trails, but I'm happy me and Rain Drop decided to take this opportunity to get a few miles on the flat path and enjoy being on easy trail with wonderful scenery.

Rail trails are for bicycles and hikers with little or no hard hills to climb. They all were once a railroad many years ago and usually run along the side of rivers and thick forest.

Tunnel Hill has rivers, swamps and ponds as well as forest and stretched out plains. Sometimes the rocky bluffs offer beautiful caves and cliffs too.

I'm very happy to be on the easier path at the moment as I am ready to get further east. I am able to get more miles on the flat rail trails and I sometimes enjoy night hiking too. It's also been nice to have the pleasure of meeting a few more people along the way as well.

I'm hoping to make my way to Indiana and Kentucky soon because I honestly think that me and Rain Drop hound dog have been in Illinois for quite awhile now. I have to admit that I often spend more time at some campsites these days, I guess I just don't want to go to town very often.
