The History of Taoist Temple
The Taoist temple was built in 1972 by Cebu’s substantial Chinese Community. It is considered as the center of worship for Taoism, following the teaching of the ancient philosopher Lao Tzu. The man also authored “Tao Te Ching” which means The Book of The Way in English. It is written approximately 2,500 years ago and it has taken its place in history being the first written record about Taoism.
The temple has 81 steps (which we successfully climbed) representing the 81 chapters of Taoism Scriptures. Upon reaching the top, you can light joss sticks and have your fortune read by monks. We did not venture to try the fortune reading thing because I personally don't believe in such and I do not want to have my fortune read just for the fun of it.
Also, the temple has many terraces where you can get a view of downtown Cebu. While Christianity believes in God designing the universe and all that is in it, Taoism believes that everything in nature happens without forethought.
According to Taoist Philosophy, our mission is to return to the natural way of life, not burdened by complicated social institutions and intellectual ideas.
