The Land of Centaurs
Chiron was different from the rest of the centaurs. It was because he was immortal; child of Titan Cronus. Wise and just not only among the others of his kind but also among people.
When it was agreed that centaurs should leave Thessaly plains and grant that land to Lapiths, Chiron tried to find the best place for them to live. He travelled to Pelion the closest mountain and was fascinated by the beauty of the place. He thought that the combination of mountain and sea landscapes, would calm centaurs and make them overcome their wilderness, lusty, violent nature. He would try to educate them, to make them more civilized and able to live in harmony with the nature, the rest of the creatures of the forest and the people.
Years passed and life was rolling peacefully. The relations with the neighboring Lapiths were improved. The latter decided to invite them to the wedding of their king. The offered wine intoxicated centaurs, waked their instincts, made them disrespectful to their hosts; they tried to steal the women of the Lapiths including the bride herself. An immediate fight and a following war ended with the total defeat of centaurs. Their punishment was exile to another distant (this time) mountain; Pindos in the northwest of Greece.
Only Chiron was allowed to stay in Pelion, alone with his immortality. He turned to men and decided to make them better. The sons of the kings and the best families of Greece were sent to learn from Chiron, live in the forests, swim in the crystal waters of streams and sea, and find the virtues of the ancient warriors.
