Soviet "pixel art" in Samara. Part Two: Shards of the Empire

in #travel6 years ago

Mosaics are the most effective part of the artistic heritage of the Soviet Union, created to beautify the urban environment. You can call them unique museum exhibits - these things reflect the spirit of the era, and this is their main value. But the objects of Soviet monumental art are very vulnerable - without due care and protection of the state they are destroyed and disappear.

With the Samara mosaics things are bad. In the normal (relatively) state there are only one. Most of the old age and the lack of even a minimal cosmetic repair simply crumbles. Over the air conditioners are installed, they hang advertising. Some stupidly painted. But this monumental heritage must be preserved for posterity. Because it is a living and visible document of the epoch, in spite of the fact that technically such panels can be made and now it is impossible to repeat the scope of the Soviet monumentalists.
