Surfing spots and surf house in Donghe, Taitung, Taiwan (Feat. YOLO)

Taitung is one of the most famous surfing spots in Asia. The final longboard championship is held at the end of year every year in Donghe, Taitung. So many Taiwan surfers go to Donghe for a surfing trip, but it is hard to get informations about how and where we can surf as a foreigner or traveller. Therefore, I want to introduce surfing spots and a surf shop where I went in Donghe.

1. Jinzun harbor 金樽港

This is the place where the longboard championship was held.

I added a video of final match of world surf league, longboard championship.

Caution: Do not ride too long. There is a seawall right in front of you. There is a strong tide current there, so it is very hard to escape once you get in.

2. Jinzun-left 金樽左

Location:

Here the surfers ride the board to the left direction. The water depth is shallow and the wave slope comes in deeply so that here is suitable for short-board.

Caution: Longboards can be dangerous since the water depth is shallow.

3. Jinzun beach 金樽海灘

Location: see the map above.

This is where the waves break glassy even when the wind is strong and another points are choppy, becuase the breakwater of Jinzun Port is blocking behind. It is a point break type area that breaks waves only in one place.

The wave breaks slowly but it is a very fast and powerful wave once it breaks.

Both longboards and shortboards are good, but longboards are more suitable, I think.

Caution: Be careful of shore breaks.

4. Rivermouth

There are two different points for shortboarders and longboarders in Rivermouth. Longboarders' point is located a bit further north.

This is the point for longboarders. Wave breaks slowly and long.

5. YOLO surf house

YOLO surf house is run by a couple of Lesliey and Guem-Ah. They can coomunicate in Chinese, English, and Korean. I had two surfing sessions a day. The time we meet depend on the situation of wave and tide.

This is the room I used. The room consists of 2 floors, with 2 beds on each floor. Geum-Ah was very sensitive to worms and cleanliness, so the room was definitely neat before I went in. Maybe I ruined it..

We wend on a surftrip in the morning and afternoon, two times a day.

We spent about 2-3 hours surfing each sessions.

There are two bicycles in the guesthouse. You can use it when you look around the town.
