Tasmania Day 6 - Part 1 - East Coast and the Bay of Fires
Today our trip led us up along the East Coast of Tasmania, and to the Bay of Fires! Departing our accommodation, we headed up to Bicheno and followed the coast north.

Our first stop was just on the edge of Bicheno, near Waubs Bay.
We explored the rock formations, as well as the tidal pools. We saw the orange lichen that the Bay of Fires is famous for.

Lagoons Beach
Lagoons Beach was beautiful. Crystal blue ocean and white sand. The waves crashing on the shore, the gentle sun on my skin - it was lovely. I took far too many photos.
Tiny animals left some interesting formations in the sand -
And we spotted a juvenile gull, perhaps a Kelp Gull or Pacific Gull? (I'm not too familiar with birds so this is what google is leading me to think...)
Bay of Fires
We were back on the road again, this time to the Bay of Fires.
Burns Bay looked like a good vantage point, and so we explored the Bay from there.
We saw the orange lichen rocks, but having seen those in Bicheno, we were a bit unimpressed! We had expected a lot more from this area, but it was what we had seen all up the coast already.

The Lichen
Lichen is algae or cyanobacteria living on fungi in a mutually beneficial relationship. This lichen is what provides the Bay of Fires, and the other rocks on the east coast of Tasmania, with their distinctive orange colouring.
We even saw some of the usual green lichen -

Bay of Fires was really disappointing... but your photos kind of make me want to go back haha. False advertising!
For just a small town that didn’t really mean anything along the trip, Bicheno turned out to be really cool. Great food, (great wifi 😂), the penguins and the coastline. Unexpectedly cool spot!
For a place that was only supposed to be a quick stop, we sure ended up spending a lot of time there! I could spend hours exploring those rocks and rock pools, we'll have to go back sometime.
