Tahiti #1 - Getting Familiar with the Island

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

Beginning a 90 day roadtrip to escape the Canadian winter, we stopped in early February in Tahiti for a week to relax, acclimate, and adjust to some of the time change we would experience as we continued on to Australia and New Zealand.

View from our apartment in Puna'auia, a town about 10 kilometers southwest of the capital, Papaette.

Similar view at sunset, looking across the anchorage and reef to Moorea.

Papaette was more modern than expected, definitely not the Tahiti we learned about from following Marlon Brando filming 'Mutiny on the Bounty'- but that was 50 years ago! Rain clouds on the hills behind the town - it rained most days, but only for short periods.

First stop on a half-day tour round the island - Marae Arahurahu, shrine sacred to the Polynesian people.

Bain de Vaima falls which cleansed a Polynesian God.

Rocky beaches - there were few sand beaches, and they were black due to the volcanic sand.

Cruise ships in Papaette harbour, a good place to start touring the Polynesian islands.

Roulettes (in Canada - food trucks) in the parking area near the tourist information office and cruise ship quay, a great place to get dinner after a day touring! Lots of variety, good food, quick, and reasonably priced.

Stay tuned for Tahiti #2!

Beautiful photos, definitely on my bucket list to visit one day

Thanks for feedback - if you need any travel advice when that happens, let me know.

It won't be anytime soon, but I'll be sure to keep you in mind when I do. There no way I can afford or have the time to stay in Tahiti. I hear it's really expensive haha

I found a great apartment, for the week almost what friends paid for 1 day (!) in a major hotel waiting to join their cruise! We were outside the main town and without a car, but we managed. Also my wife wanted to pay about $15 US for small boxes of grapes and cherries - thought because we were on a tropical island all fruit was grown there - wrong! So expensive yes, but you can find a way to minimize this.

Thanks so much. Saw you had resteemed it but didn't see this 'congrats' till just now. Will see who else you are featuring, try to look every day, always great selections.

Thanks for the feedback.
