A Walk Among The Giants

Nestled away 400km south of Perth, between Walpole and Denmark is the Walpole Wilderness National Park. It is an area full of huge Karri and Tingle trees, and many gravel tracks and trails you can follow. One of the big attractions there is the Valley Of The Giants Treetop Walk. Quite a few years ago, when my father was out visiting us, we went on a 7 day trip through the southwest of Western Australia, covering a total of about 1700km. The visit to the treetop walk was one of the highlights of our trip.

The treetop walk is a 600m loop through the giant trees in the forest, on a ramp which gently climbs to 40m above the forest floor, where you'll find yourself in the canopy of the trees, looking through the trees, on over the top of the forest in some places.

40m Doesn't seem like much, but when you're up there, and the platform is swaying around a little, 40m is quite high enough for some...

The views from up there are quite amazing.

Another nearby attraction is the giant (huuuge) red Tingle tree, which has survived 2 big fires in 1937 and 1951, which burnt through and hollowed out its trunk, but still survives and is visited by thousands of tourists every year.

It survived only due to its bark protecting its outer living and growing parts from the flames. To give you an idea of it size, this is my wife, son and I standing inside the hollowed out tree.

If you're heading down south for a getaway, The Valley Of The Giants is definitely worth a visit.

This was a 7 day trip I would love to do again, but probably in 14 days so I can visit the places we drove past between stops. Such a beautiful country we live in, with such diversity from north to south, and east to west.
