Day of the dead in Perú - Día de los muertos en Perú

November 1st is the day of all saints and the day of the dead is november 2nd. In Perú many people visit their dead loved one to the cementery and spend the day with them. I went to the largest cementery in Perú, and known also as the 2nd largest one in the world. It is the cementery in the desert hills of Villa María del Triunfo, a popular neighborhood in the south of Lima.

Families gather around the grave of their loved one. There are dances, bands, food, beer. It is a celebration, a custom that mixes Catholic tradition with andean beliefs.

The cemetery is located in the arid hills crowded. It is a fair with food stalls, vendors of all kinds. In the chapels there is prayer and meditation but outside there is celebration. I think it's a way to celebrate life as well.

El 1ro de noviembre es el día de todos los santos y el 2 de noviembre el día de los muertos. En Perú, las familias se juntan alrededor de la tumba de su ser querido. Hay bailes, bandas musicales, comida, cerveza. Es una celebración, una costumbre que mezcla la tradición católica con las creencias andinas.

El cementerio que se encuentra en los cerros áridos se llena de gente. Es una feria con puestos de comida, vendedores de todo tipo (comida, de velas, pintores, músicos, etc.). No se ve ambiente de tristeza. En las capillas hay rezo y recogimiento pero afuera hay celebración. Creo que es una forma de celebrar la vida también.
