Festival banned in India, alive and well in Penang, Malaysia!—Ouch! Ouch! Seriously, Ouch!!! (Video)
“Thaipusam is a Hindu festival celebrated mostly by the Tamil community on the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai (January/February). It is mainly observed in countries where there is a significant presence of Tamil community.
The word Thaipusam is a combination of the name of the month, Thai, and the name of a star, Pusam. This particular star is at its highest point during the festival. The festival commemorates the occasion when Parvati gave Murugan a Vel "spear" so he could vanquish the evil demon Soorapadman.” --Wikipedia
This Hindu Thaipusam festival annually takes place about 10 minutes from where we live in Penang.

Yikes.
It does appear, however, that the spikes are just barely driven under the skin. There's still a risk of infection, but it looks like it ultimately does no permanent damage to the person.
Perhaps it would be best to keep an open mind? Maybe? No? I dunno.
I noticed that too, that the hooks were shallow. Still a bunch of them--ouch! Thanks for your comment!! Now following!
