Malana

An ancient village in Himachal Pradesh which is popular among the drug mafia for its famous extraction of Cannabis and Hash. Yes, Malana is called World's Top Stoner Destination.

But in reality, the place is so much more than just charas and hashish.

What we don't know about this stoner's paradise is that it is famous for its peculiar customs and beliefs. According to its people, Malana is among the oldest democracies around the world.

The beauty of Malana is in the magical lush green environment. Once you enter the village, you will be greeted by a river flowing through the valley, overlooking the Deotiba and Chandrakhani Peaks but also, the place has some hidden secrets.

So, come, let's see what makes this place extravagant in its own.

Malana is best known for its Hashish.

Have you ever heard of Malana cream?

Malana cream is a part of Cannabis hashish which is known for its bountiful oil content and aroma. You will be amazed to know that Malana cream is among the most expensive marijuana available in Amsterdam.

Outsiders are not allowed to touch anything or anyone in the village.

Okay! So, if you are at a shop buying something in Malana, the shopkeeper will keep the item on the counter and will ask you to place the money there, without any physical contact. Strange, but true.

In Malana, outsiders are not allowed to touch anything in the village. Especially when it comes to women in Malana, outsiders are not allowed to reach out to them. People in the town are very protective of their women.

They believe they are descendants of Alexander.

The citizens of Malana follow the culture of ancient Greece. This is because they consider themselves the descendants of Alexander the Great.

The citizens have unshaken faith in their deity Jamblu Devta.

According to the sources, the people of Malana blindly believe their powerful deity Jamblu Devta. The village council of 11 people are, called the delegates of Jamblu the one who governs the village. His decision on any dispute is the ultimate decision.

They follow very unusual judicial system to solve a case.,/h3>

For people of Malana, a godly approach is above all. According to Travel Triangle, when a case arrives in its judiciary, they make a deep cut in the foreleg of a lamb belonging each of the two parties, put poison in it and sew it back. The person whose sheep will die first will lose the case.

People of Malana are self-proclaimed-superior.

As I mentioned, the people of Malana refrain from any physical contact with the outsiders. They speak a language that is not allowed to be used by an outsider. Even, the outsiders are not allowed to enter the temples. Overall, outsiders in Malana are treated as untouchables.

They even have their architectural rules.

Houses in Malana are divided specifically. The ground floor is called Khudang, which is used for keeping cattle, firewood and fodder.

The first floor aka Gaying is for storing eatables and wool for weaving. The top level is for the living. It is called Pati.

The restriction list for the outsiders is very long...

In case you ever found yourself accused of a crime, remember, in Malana, police intervention is not allowed. But still, if you want to seek help from them, you need to pay Rs. 1,000 fine to the village council.

Their famous celebration is called Malana Fagli .

Malana Fagli is Harlala Mark Dance Festival which is celebrated in February. It is an occasion when people of Malana take a bath together as a village.

A group of people, wearing nothing but cannabis leaves and demon-like masks dance around the houses. They spread cow dung everywhere which is suitable for providing insulation from the cold.

According to a The Culture Trip, a legend says that the Jamblu Devta once cured Akbar and this is why the king never collected any tax from the Malana village. Every year this incident is enacted at the festival of Fagli.

That's all, folks. I hope you liked the story.
