📌Phi Phi Lee - Hidden Treasures of Thailand

Phi Phi Lee is an uninhabited island in Thailand, southeast of the famous Phuket resort. Domestic tourism has been developing since the middle of the last century, while the island came to the world tourist scene in 1999 when the film "Beach" with Leonardo DiCaprio was shot. Phi Phi Lee is located within the Phi Phi archipelago and occupies an area of about 7km2. Although uninhabited today, on this and other islands of the Phi Phi archipelago there are traces of the oldest civilization of Thailand, dating back to the age of the old era. The entire archipelago is protected as a national park in 1983.

Film "Beach" by director Dennis Boyle was filmed by the novel of the same name as Alex Gerland. For the purpose of shooting, Maja Bay has been rearranged and most of the vegetation has been removed. This has led to the disapproval of the ecologists, under whose pressure the vegetation has been restored. Bad luck continues in 2004 when it was hit and completely destroyed by the tsunami. The natural catastrophes that hit the island have only increased the interest of tourists. The season lasts from November to April when the island visits 1,000 people a day. The most popular places are the Bay of Maya and the cave of Viking. Organized transportation by plane or boat exists in the season from Phuket and Krabia.

The film "Beach" has been sharply criticized and nominated for Golden Raspberry. However, he is credited with the enormous development of tourism in this part of Thailand. Revenue from tourists contributed to a complete reconstruction after the tsunami, and the bakers are especially grateful to Boyle because they have discovered a new wild world to be explored. Authorities in Thailand ordered in March the closure of May Bay beach in order to stop ecological pollution that caused the arrival of too many tourists.
