📌Monsanto - a stone village

In the far west of the Pyrenees Peninsula and in the far west of Europe, in Portugal, Mount Monsanto is located which has become far-known in the world for the homonymous, ancient, fortified settlement that is here. The village of Monsanto is located on the slopes of the granite hill and is characterized by its being built between giant stones. In order to adapt to the natural environment, the large walls of an elliptical shape, the villagers built their houses between the walls, thus mingling with nature, giving this place a unique charm. The history of this settlement dates back to the 6th century BC when the first inhabitants, Lustians, were settled by the ruins of the ruins, with a wonderful view of this region. Throughout history, Monsanto has been a frequent target for the attackers because of its excellent strategic position, but it has often remained ungrounded due to this inaccessibility. Numerous houses still have Gothic gates of a few centuries old, and the small streets, or, to put it more correctly, stone sockets are steep and wide just so that a man with an ass passes. Their antique appearance has not changed for centuries, which is why there is an impression that the time in this settlement stands.

The inhabitants of this place every third year celebrate the festival of the Holy Cross in honor of the heroic resistance under the siege of the Romans. On this day, it is customary for women to carry on the top of the fortress of the doll and clay pots of full flowers and to throw them away from the walls. This custom dates back to Christ, when the settlement was under the Roman siege for seven years. During this period, the locals fired the Romans with food remains, giving them the knowledge that the foods were in abundance and this trick, they made the Romans from further siege.

Today, this place has more than 800 people, mostly elderly, who can yearn for an increasing number of visitors who come to be personal witnesses of the existence of this magical place. Since 1938, this village has been declared a national park and is the most Portuguese village, and since then, further construction has been limited to maintain its authentic appearance. Due to inaccessibility, it is not easy to reach public transport by this point, but its panorama is worth every effort.
