El Jarillo, a German enclave in the Venezuelan mountains / El Jarillo, un enclave alemán en las montañas venezolanas

Among the steep ridges of the “Altos mirandinos” that are part of the mountain range of the Venezuelan central coast, more than 1700 meters above sea level, is the site chosen by several families descended from waves of German immigrants that in the middle of the XIX century they landed to settle in Colonia Tovar and about 50 years later, found El Jarillo, a kind of younger brother of what was the first enclave.

One hundred years after its foundation, it still preserves the typical architecture inherited from the region, also mountainous, of Schwarzwald (Black Forest), as well as its gastronomy and other social aspects that merge with elements of local culture, giving interesting mixtures, examples of the constant intercultural dialogue of which this diverse country is part.

Its strategic location was of great importance in other times, since it allows the connection, by the green roads, with several relevant populated centers, including the central coast.

Agriculture is the main economic activity, highlighting its fruit crops where the peach stands out, being El Jarillo the largest producer in the country of this seasonal fruit adapted very well in these high mountains.

The tourist activity has been consolidated in the last decades due to its mountain climate, its excellent gastronomic and hotel offer and its green landscapes that border the Macarao National Park, ideal for practicing extreme sports: trekking, hiking, bicicross and its famous paragliders, which provide professionals, amateurs and daring onlookers with the opportunity to enjoy a stroll through the heights.

I have a great affection for this region, I grew up close to its mountains, and even rural I am amazed to think of them as settings where the first global processes, perhaps not so harmonious, of the last 500 years were forged.

Entre las empinadas serranías de los altos mirandinos que forman parte de la cordillera de la costa central venezolana, a más 1700 metros de altura sobre el nivel del mar, se encuentra el sitio elegido por varias familias descendientes de oleadas de inmigrantes alemanes que a mediados del siglo XIX desembarcaron para establecerse en la Colonia Tovar y posteriormente, unos 50 años después, fundar El Jarillo, una especie de hermano menor de lo que fue el primer enclave.

A un centenario de su fundación, aún conserva la arquitectura típica heredada de la región, también montañosa, de Schwarzwald (Selva Negra), así como su gastronomía y otros rasgos sociales que se fusionan con elementos de la cultura local, dando interesantes mixturas, ejemplos del constante diálogo intercultural del que forma parte este diverso país.

Su ubicación estratégica fue de mucha importancia en otros tiempos, ya que permite la conexión, por los caminos verdes, con varios centros poblados relevantes, incluyendo el litoral central.

La agricultura es la principal actividad económica, destacando sus cultivos frutales donde sobresale el durazno, siendo El Jarillo el mayor productor del país de esta fruta estacional adaptada muy bien en estas altas montañas.

La actividad turística se ha consolidado en las últimas décadas debido a su clima de montaña, su excelente oferta gastronómica y hotelera y sus verdes parajes que colindan con el Parque Nacional Macarao, ideales para la práctica de deportes extremos: trekking, hiking, bicicross y sus famosos parapentes, que brindan la oportunidad de disfrutar de un paseo por las alturas a profesionales, aficionados y atrevidos curiosos.

Tengo un gran afecto por esta región, crecí cerca de sus montañas, y aún rurales me maravilla pensarlas como escenarios donde se forjaron los primeros procesos globales, quizás no tan armoniosos, muy cdm, de los últimos 500 años.
