Long Neck Women Kayan and Padaung people
In LOIKAW, Myanmar Women of the Kayan tribes and in Padaung treibes Thailand identify themselves by their forms of dress as well as known for wearing neck rings, brass coils that are placed around the neck, appearing to lengthen it. around the age of 5 girls of kayan tribe start wearing brass ring around their neck, Over the years the coil is replaced by a longer one and more turns are added,Coils weighing up to 25 pounds.
The weight of the brass rings pushes the collar bone down and compresses the rib cage. The neck itself is not lengthened. stretched neck is created by the deformation of the clavicle
The origin of the tradition mystifies even the Kayans. An ancient legend claims rings protected villagers from tiger attacks, since the cats attack victims at the neck. Another theory said the rings helped ward off men from rival tribes by lessening the women’s beauty. Today, people believe the opposite– the longer their neck, the more beautiful the woman, but probably symbolically
The government of Myanmar began discouraging neck rings as it struggled to appear more modern to the developed world. Consequently, many women in Myanmar began breaking the tradition, though a few older women and some of the younger girls in remote villages continued to wear rings. In Thailand
