My hiking partner and I discovered paradise above the treeline in Central Washington today.

The Enchantments are just to the north, but are so popular it is practically impossible to get a permit.

The Lake Ingalls hike not only features these spectacular views of Stuart Mountain and larches beginning to turn yellow, but funky old stumps, reddening huckleberries, interesting and colorful rocks, and of course the lake itself. (I never knew Dr. Seuss inspired alpine larches!) One of the best new discoveries I've made in years.

About 2500 feet elevation gain, divided into two parts: a long but smooth uphill slog right from the start of about 2000 feet in three miles, with good views. Then scrambling down and up from the pass to the lake -- much less smooth, but the views become amazing, as you can see.
