Flat Stanley Visits Tierras Altas Panama

in #travel6 years ago

We had some friends ask us to do Flat Stanley for their son's class at school. This was a lot of fun to take him around while we were doing fun activities. Today, our friend was presenting Flat Stanley and his adventures to his class.

Dear Rhys –

Thank you for sending me to visit your friends in Panama. We had so much fun after I finally arrived. It took a long time for me to get there! Do you think that picture of me with Baru in the background looks like someone sleeping?

They live in a small town called Volcan. It is at the base of the volcano called Baru. While I was there, I got to do a lot of fun activities, like go horseback riding with my new friend. That sure was fun, but I had to hold on tight!

While I was visiting, we got to go pick up their grandpa who was coming to visit. He rode the bus in from San Jose, Costa Rica. The Costa Rica border is about one hour from their house, so we drove to it and then we got to walk over. So one day I got to visit Panama and Costa Rica!!

The International Fair in David, a city near their house, was going on too. We went to see the horses and a really old train they had set up. David is a hot city and the second largest in Panama, but it was fun to go to the fair there.

One day, we went to the town of Boquete that is about an hour from Tierras Altas. We went to the Tuesday Gringo Market. There are a lot of people there selling all kinds of items – from traditional Panamanian clothes, to souvenirs, to local produce. You can also find a lot of people to talk to there. Lots of North Americans retire in Boquete which is called the town of Eternal Spring because the weather is just about perfect all year long. Tierras Altas has some pretty perfect weather too! In one of my pictures, we drove up the mountain to look down on Boquete!

At the Tuesday Gringo Market, we got to listen to a geologist talk about the volcano. He says that it is sleeping. Let’s hope it stays that way! It has erupted 4 times in the last 1600 years – the last time was 500 years ago!

One other fun thing we did in Boquete was go to the natural climbing wall. It was made by the volcano when hot ash cooled off really fast! It was really neat because we had just learned about it from the geologist! I had fun climbing up!

We also saw a really big waterfall and the river.

My favorite thing to do was probably play with the kids at the park. I had such a fun time in Tierras Altas! Thank you for sending me to Panama for a visit!

Nice, this makes me want to make a trip there one day despite me being on the other side of the world.

It looks like you found a nice place to do some rock climbing, too! Good sedimentary rock layers... Did you see any interesting fossils there?

Poor Stanley would freeze his bum, here.

Hi Flat Stanley..nice meeting u here! ;D Anyway what a nice view of volcano rock climbing.. wow I wish I have got a chance too! Unfortunately the nearest volcano from my place is Indonesia (Msia neighbor). Horse riding is fun right! My daughter who has mild autism did horse riding too (called hippotherapy). Interesting post @apanamamama! Thank you for sharing about this place ;)

Looks like Flat Stanley had a lot of fun, especially around horses and on that climbing wall, good thing he had a little helper in climbing 💚

Great fun. My son’s flat Stanley went on missions in Iraq. When my brother sent it back to him and he wrote his report, he made the local papers. That was a fun memory. The other guys in his unit all made copies and decorated their Stanley’s with their favorite sports teams. All the trucks in that unit had a flat Stanley in it.

Haha this is such a cool idea for a kids project! Plus a nice way to teach. Very very cool post ^^ I've been in Panama for 3 years and have never been to David. I really want to :(

I need to come down to visit. Looks like lots of cool adventures. We had a flat Stanley sent to us last year. I took him snorkeling.

That locomotive is in Boquete or David? It must be new. Did Flat Stanley went for an ice cream at Sugar & Spice?
