Too Far North: Fort Calhoun, Nebraska
Hello everyone! After a long week of work, my wife and I decided to head back to her neck of the woods in Fort Calhoun for a relaxing Friday evening.
Some background about the town. Fort Calhoun is a small town of just over 1,000 residents and it is about a 15 minute drive north of Omaha. In this small town is a wine shop called “Too Far North.” The owner, Sandy is a resident of the town and has some great connections with local winery’s and breweries.
As you walk into the building, you notice how small, cozy, and rustic it is. The building used to be the towns only saloon in the late 1800’s and later a bank before going back to selling alcohol.
Not sure if you can see by looking at the pictures, but this place has a great selection of local wines and beer. One of my favorite breweries in Omaha, infusion, brewed a pistachio porter that they ran out of due to the high demand. Sandy, however had a keg of it left so I decided to give it a shot:
This porter is amazing! Imagine eating a handful of pistachios except with sugar instead of salt. Also, like most porters, let it warm up just a tad bit and it tastes even better!
My wife, Chelsea decided to with a semi-sweet red wine from deer springs, a local winery and that was incredible as well!
Here is a view of the Main Street on highway 75. Fort Calhoun is a beautiful, charming, small town that is in a perfect location. You get the small town feel while being only a short, 15 minute drive from a large metropolitan are of over 1 million residents. My wife and I plan to own a home and start a family there. If you are ever in the Omaha/metro area, I hope that we could have a STEEM meetup so that you can check out a few hidden gems like this place.
Also, the longhorn bar resides right next door and that’s another hidden gem known for their wings!
