Bryce Canyon National Park | Utah's Mighty 5
Bryce Canyon
For our fourth stop of Utah's Mighty 5, we visit Bryce Canyon National Park. After watching the sunrise at Sunrise Point, we quickly headed over to Sunset Point for a breathtaking hike down into the canyons.
Navajo Loop Trail
The Navajo Loop Trail is 1.3 miles, drops down into the amphitheater and passes through "Wall Street," a narrow switchbacked slot between sheer cliffs, with towering Douglas fir trees growing along the trail.
Thor's Hammer
The trail provides outstanding views of much-photographed Thor's Hammer - a tall, narrow pinnacle with a narrower neck, supporting a large hammerhead-like rock.
Hoodoos
At Bryce Canyon, hoodoos range in size from that of an average human to heights exceeding a 10-story building. Formed in sedimentary rock, hoodoo shapes are affected by the erosional patterns of alternating hard and softer rock layers.
Amphitheaters
Bryce is famous for its unique geology, consisting of a series of horseshoe-shaped amphitheaters carved from the eastern edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau in southern Utah.
Sunset Point
Navajo Loop Trail ends by going back up a series of switchbacks and finally concludes at Sunset Point. Even though it was only a few hours after sunrise, we were lucky enough to capture this amazing shot.
Don't Feed The Squirrels
The squirrels were overly friendly as well. This seems to be a common thread at all of the Mighty 5 national parks, here in Utah.
Parowan Gap's Petroglyphs
The petroglyphs here are thought to be the work of several cultural groups and represent a long period of use by Native cultures. What these designs mean is still unknown. Archaeologists debate that they represent concepts, ideas or actual happenings. Perhaps they were part of a religious activity or hunting ritual. The local Native Americans consider them to be an important part of their cultural history relating stories of their ancestor's lifeways.
What a way to end the day, by visiting Parowan Gap's petroglyphs. I actually found this on freecampsites.netand you bet I spent the night there. My internet connection was actually the fastest its been in weeks.
