Even if you are not a Sci-fi fan, I bet you most likely have seen a movie about time travel, where the craziest of things are done like going back in the past to kill a super villain when he was yet a child.
Thinking about time travel, interesting thing isn't it?
If only it were possible.

Well I'm here to break it to you, Yes, IT IS POSSIBLE TO TIME TRAVEL. Well before you go on all crazy on me, this dude watches too many movies, just be patient a little and hear me out.

The past
The concept of time is an illusion. Let's take our sun for example, it takes 8 minutes for light from the Sun to reach the earth. Whenever you look at the sun, you're basically staring not at the present sun, but as the sun was 8 minutes ago. So basically, you're looking at the past. If the sun was somehow extinguished, and no longer in existence, we from earth will still be seeing the Sun for the next 8 minutes because this is how long it takes the light to reach us over here in the earth.

The Future
Everyday we time travel at 1x the speed into the future(i.e 1min/min, 1hr/hr etc.) That is why we are able to see the next second, minute and so on, but what if we were to speed things up a bit and go even faster into the Future? Well, theoretically, this is 100 % possible

Thanks to Albert Einstein, we know that the faster you go, the slower time passes. So if you were to hop on a very fast spaceship and this space ship was travelling at the speed of light it will make time pass really slowly for you who's in the space ship. Other people on earth who are not on this space ship will be experiencing normal time, ie 1x the speed. This will literally put them ahead of you.

So let's say you spent 5 years travelling on a space ship at the speed of light (2.5 years out and 2.5 years back) due to the slowing down of time in the space ship and the relatively fast but normal speed on earth, when you are back to earth, roughly 36 years must have passed, so you are now 36 years in the future. 😲

Moving forward
So now, we know that it is possible to time travel to the future, so why don't we get started with this space ship thing immediately? I dunno about you but I'm very eager to start this stuff.
Well, not so fast. You see travelling at the speed of light isn't something that's achievable based on the current technology we have.

To reach 99.9 percent the speed of light, a space ship will need an enormous amount of energy and with our current technology, the fastest manned spacecraft which is the Apollos has only been able to accomplish a speed of 11km/s which is about 0.004% the speed of light.
Also, materials that would be able to withstand travelling at the speed of light is beyond our current engineering capabilities.

In conclusion, time travel is theoretically possible, we don't just have the required technology yet.
I hope to be on a ride in a spaceship with you in the near future when we have all of this figured out.
